Our next WVARA meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 8, in Meeting Room 3 at the Silicon Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, 2731 N. First Street at Plumeria Drive (southwest corner) in San Jose.
This month’s presentation will also be viewable online via Zoom. Zoom login details will be released via WVARA’s chat reflector a few hours before the meeting.
Social time begins around 6:40 PM, with the meeting officially starting at 7:00 PM. If you haven’t been to the Red Cross in a while, “talk-in” is usually available on the Association’s repeaters. The best choice would be 2m/220.
Several of us meet for dinner prior to the meeting at 5:30 PM at nearby Dish N Dash (2551 N. 1st St., San Jose). Feel free to join us.
Long-time WVARA member Dave Brown, WR6Z, will bring us up to speed on AllStarLink. AllStarLink is a network of amateur radio repeaters, remote base stations, and hotspots that are accessible to one another via Voice over Internet Protocol. It runs on a dedicated computer (including a Raspberry Pi) that you host at your home, radio site, or computer center.
WVARA has recently added AllStar capabilities to the club’s repeater system. Dave’s presentation will include an introduction to AllStar / AllStarLink and show how you can set up your own node to connect to the club repeater as well as AllStar nodes worldwide.
Dave, a Bay Area native, was first licensed in 1977 as WD6EBC and later upgraded to Extra Class, changing his call sign to WR6Z. He has been active in the hobby since he was first licensed and enjoys building projects, working on radio equipment, and operating portable on HF, VHF, and UHF. A graduate of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Dave has worked in electrical engineering for over 36 years, specializing in RF, mixed-signal, and power management systems.
**Three things to remember:** * We recommend entering through the main entrance on the north side of the building. * The Red Cross locks the main entrance at 7:00 PM sharp, so please arrive early to gain access to the building. * We will be in Meeting Room 3—about 100 feet from any entrance. As a result, latecomers who knock on an outside door may not be heard.
If you need help getting in, you can press the call button at the door or reach Tim’s cellphone at (408-929-9311).
See you there! Jim, K6EI WVARA Vice President |
