Our next WVARA meeting will be held in-person at 7pm on Wednesday, March 8, in Meeting Room 3 at the\u00a0Silicon Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, 2731 N. First Street at Plumeria Drive (southwest corner) in San Jose.\u00a0 \u00a0If you haven’t been to the Red Cross in a while, “talk-in” is usually available on the Association’s repeaters. Social time for this month\u2019s meeting will begin around 6:45pm, with this month\u2019s presentation beginning at 7pm. \u00a0\u00a0This month\u2019s presenter is\u00a0Paul Wesling, KM6LH, who will be speaking about amateur radio\u2019s dramatic impact on the beginnings of the Silicon Valley. \u00a0Why did Silicon Valley come into being? \u00a0\u00a0The \u00a0story \u00a0goes \u00a0back \u00a0to \u00a0local \u00a0Hams \u00a0(amateur \u00a0radio\u00a0\u00a0operators) trying to break RCA’s tube patents, \u201cangel\u201d\u00a0\u00a0investors, the\u00a0sinking of the Titanic, Fred Terman and\u00a0\u00a0Stanford \u00a0University, \u00a0local \u00a0invention \u00a0of \u00a0high\u2010power\u00a0\u00a0tubes, \u00a0WW \u00a0II \u00a0and \u00a0radar, \u00a0William \u00a0Shockley’s \u00a0mother\u00a0\u00a0living in Palo Alto,\u00a0and the SF Bay Area infrastructure\u00a0\u00a0that \u00a0developed \u00a0\u2013 \u00a0these \u00a0factors \u00a0pretty \u00a0much\u00a0\u00a0determined that the semiconductor and IC industries\u00a0\u00a0would be located in California\u2019s\u00a0Santa Clara Valley, and\u00a0\u00a0that the Valley would remain the world\u2019s innovation center as new technologies emerged \u2013 computers, then\u00a0\u00a0software, mobile, biotech, Big Data,\u00a0VR\/AR,\u00a0autonomous vehicles and now blockchain \u2013 and it would become\u00a0\u00a0the model for innovation worldwide. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0This\u00a0presentation\u00a0gives an exciting and colorful history of device technology development and innovation that\u00a0\u00a0began in Palo Alto, then spread across the Santa Clara Valley during and\u00a0following World War II. \u00a0You’ll meet\u00a0\u00a0some of the colorful characters \u2013 Cyril Elwell, Leonard Fuller, Lee de Forest, Bill Eitel W6UF, Charles Litton 6AO,\u00a0\u00a0Fred Terman\u00a06AE\/W6DI, David \u00a0Packard 9DRV, \u00a0Bill Hewlett, \u00a0Russ \u00a0Varian and \u00a0others \u2013 extending \u00a0to Nolan\u00a0\u00a0Bushnell W7DUK and Steve Wozniak WA6BND \u2013 who came to define\u00a0the worldwide electronics industries\u00a0\u00a0through their inventions and process development. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul is an IEEE  Life  Fellow and Distinguished  Lecturer and has  observed the  Valley  for  decades as an  engineer, executive,  resident, and educator.  He received  degrees  in  electrical  engineering  and  materials  science  from  Stanford University, then worked locally at companies including Lenkurt Electric, Sperry\u2010 Univac, and Amdahl, joining Tandem Computers in Cupertino in 1985.  Paul retired from  HP in 2001, then served as \u201cMr. IEEE\u201d for the San Francisco Bay Area for 10 years.  He is  a  Life  Fellow  of  the  IEEE.    He  received  the  IEEE\u2019s  Centennial  Medal,  the  Board’s  Distinguished Service award, the Society Contribution Award, the IEEE’s Third Millennium  Medal,  and  the  EPS  Society\u2019s  Presidential  Recognition  Award.    He  edits  the  IEEE\/ASME\/SEMI  Heterogeneous  Integration  Roadmap  for  prediction  of  technology  directions in electronics packaging.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although we will be meeting in person, Paul\u2019s presentation will also be streamed via Zoom.  Zoom instructions will be sent via WVARA reflector and can likewise be obtained by contacting K6EI \u2014 his email is available via QRZ.

Three things to remember:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Since the west side entrance to the Red Cross Building is always locked, we recommend entering the Red Cross Building through the main entrance situated on the north side of the building.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. The Red Cross locks the main entrance at 7pm sharp, so please come a few minutes early in order to get access to the building.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. We will be in Meeting Room 3 — about 100 feet from any entrance.  As a result, late comers who knock on an outside door won\u2019t be heard from our meeting room.  If you are late and need access, you can call my cellphone (408 636-6172) and someone will come let you in.  But please try to arrive before 7pm to avoid this hassle.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
